I had the opportunity of attending the "Fine Art Exhibit" at the Royal Canadian Legion's Louisbourg branch on October 17th and 18th. The exhibit was held in the large room containing, among other things, several Canadian flags and dozens of permanently-wall-mounted historic portraits of honoured Canadian war veterans.

Once inside the exhibit, I saw a number of paintings offered for sale by an artist with an obviously-Francophone surname. Amongst her sample of paintings on the 18th was a portrait of who appeared to be René Lévesque, the founder of the *separatist* Parti Québécois political party.

While amused by the artist's painted caricatures of wildlife & scenery, I was deeply offended by what appeared to be her honouring a treasonous Canada-isn't-good-enough-for-Quebec politician in a hallowed shrine dedicated to promoting remembrance and acting in the service of Canada.

Dear Sebastian
It is a very old painting.

Well Sebastian, I was quite disappointed in your responce on several levels. The inclusion of the portrait of Rene Levesque, in the lady in question's body of work, was there solely to show some of her portrait work, not to honour or promate any political point of view.

I was also informed by a spokesperson for the artist, who relayed that the portrait was taken before he was a member of the Seperatist Party.

As the person who organized the Art Exhibit, and who is a Member of the Legion, as well as being a Monarchist to the core; you can rest assured that there was no hidden agenda to promote anything other than the work of the 8 artists/photographers who displayed their work.

It is unfortunate that you took a single negative note to be the basis of your comment rather than basing some of your comments on the fine job the artist did in preparing and presenting their work; not to mention very good work as well.

If you didn't notice, there were 2 Official Portrait's of the Queen hanging well above the level of the Levesque painting as well as the Canadian flag which you did take note of.

On a different level,Sebastian, my King James version of the bible includes artwork as well. One of the paintings in it is of Judas Iscariot and the betrayal kiss. Does this one painting nulify the quality or meaning of what the bible tries to relay. Of course not. Neither does one painting in the art exhibit nulify the body of work of the 8 artists involved nor deminish the quality of their work.

A good journalist should be able to make personal comments on the subject they are writing about, but should also include more than that comment on their apprasil of an event.

I do hope that there was something positive that you did take away with you from the show just the same.

Thank you for your reply, Clyde. It's refreshing to exchange fair comment in a public written forum rather than in clandestine gossip -- something small towns are well known for.

I re-state my belief that the artist showed poor judgment in choosing to display her Lévesque portrait at the Royal Canadian Legion -- regardless of when she actually painted it, and regardless of what other paintings appeared with it.

I remind you that Lévesque will be remembered for his sovereigntist resolve and leadership in the Quebec nationalist movement which continues to seek *unreasonable accomodation* for Quebec within Canada.

I entirely believe your claim of having had no political motivation while organizing the art exhibit. I do, however, contrast your defending of the Lévesque portrait to your passionate enforcement of RCL bylaws (wearing of hats, foul language, etc.) which deter conduct considered disrespectful to our war veterans, Canada or Her Majesty.

Regarding my perceived negativity towards the art exhibit per se, my friend and I attended the exhibit on the 17th mostly out of curiosity. While there, we were genuinely attracted to one of the artist's paintings, discussed it at home, then returned on the 18th with the intention of purchasing it for my home office. There was no other reason for our visit on that second day. Our buying decision was, unfortunately, changed when we saw the Lévesque portait. We did not see the Lévesque portrait on the first day.

Thank you again for your written reply.

I think some people who have time on their hands to sit and complain really should use their energy else where, Get out and Volunteer in the community. Instead of complaining DO you part and try and make it better instead of just spinning Negative energy around. If the community in which I lived was really that bad and It really made meunhappy to be there I would seriously consider moving . life is too damn short to sit and grumble over EVERYTHING. some seem to have made a career out of it AGAIN do something else with your time there are plenty of worthwhile organizations that could use an extra set of hands
